Franklin International 5007 5 Gallon, Titebond II Premium Wood Glue
By rodger. I was at the lumber yard buying some stuff, and needed some glue. The tite bond III looked pretty old, so I grabbed a bottle from the back of the rack. I decided to check the date code i think TB3 is good for 2 years, could be mistaken. Here is how to “crack” the date code:. The first digit represents A for America made in , the second digit is the last digit of the year of manufacture, the third and fourth digits represent the month, the fifth and sixth digits represent the day of the month and the last four digits represent the lot number. Example: A — This material was manufactured on April 27, You can post now and register later. If you have an account, sign in now to post with your account.

You might be inclined to pour out milk once the expiration date stamped on the carton has passed. Most adhesives manufacturers stamp an official shelf life on their products to limit liability in case poor storage conditions cause product failure. The stated shelf life of wood glue typically is one to two years. However, the expected shelf life of many glues stretches well past those few years; for example, when stored correctly, the white or yellow wood glue formally, polyvinyl acetate, or PVA glue many DIYers and woodworkers keep on hand can last up to 10 or more years.

I’ve had a recent series of serious glue failures using the Titebond Trim and Molding glue. I’ve used this as my glue of choice for bushing work as it expands nicely to fit the caul perfectly. Its also very easy to reverse without taking any wood off with heat when bushings need to be replaced again. I had purchased 6 bottles of glue on my last order and recently had a series of defects that’s well worth alerting the list. I had to rebush 2 Steinway concert grands recently and both bushing jobs failed miserably.
The bottles have remained in AC am wondering if it’s a shelf life issue or a bad batch of glue. Keep in mind that my normal protocol is the Bushmaster system. After bushings are initially removed, I use Protech’s stabilizer solution with mortise cauls and let set for a day. Install bushings premium cloth – let dry for a day. Apply Protech stabilizer solution to bushing cloth with bushing cauls for a day.
Usually with very good results.

I was making a clock and used titebond LH and left it overnight to dry. So today I thought enough is enough and gave old titebond another go. In between jobs I ran home, glued a small moulding strip to some off cut and left it to dry. Four hours later I came home to check on it and the glue was dry as a bone and held the piece of moulding solid on the off cut. It dawned on me that when the glue failed back then, it must of been well out of date.
This one was produced in June of this year so I have about six months shelf life left. According to Titebond the codes were changed in to the following:. No heating, no fuss but then again it is summer in Oz and the heat is really on. So with exterior and waterproof wood glues, (like Titebond II and Titebond III), Also, it has a date code printed on the back to let you know how old the glue is.
Not all glues that are popular for woodworking are necessarily the best for instrument making, and especially making a bowed psaltery. I think you get the picture. While there have been all sorts of advances made in woodworking glues for making things like furniture and crafts, IE — water resistance, extended open-time, and colored glues , many of these very same specialty glues are among the worst for making musical instruments. One of the most important factors in musical instrument building, and psalteries specifically, is creep resistance.
So with exterior and waterproof wood glues, like Titebond II and Titebond III , which are great for building furniture, their special water-resistance and other attributes frequently come at the cost of creep resistance. Supposedly, chemicals added to the glue can inhibit them from fully hardening, and this therefore decreases their strength when put under a constant load. Some glues are more forgiving than others at filling small gaps between the pieces to be joined.
It has nothing to do with aesthetics and everything to do with strength. Nonetheless, using the right kind of glue and understanding how to use it properly can go a long way in increasing the strength and longevity of your psaltery. It is critical that you moisten both surfaces of the wood with water just before gluing; this moisture activates the glue.
Also, polyurethane glue expands as it cures, so you need to have the pieces firmly clamped together or they may move apart during the curing process. The curing process takes several hours, so plan on leaving the clamps on for the better part of the day. This glue is not good at filling gaps at all, so you must take care to ensure that your joints fit together snugly when using this glue. On the upside, polyurethane glues are virtually impervious to heat, moisture, and creep.

I thought I’d share my recent experience with Liquid Hide Glue. I replaced my fingerboard a few months ago, and I ordered a bottle before I took the time to do much research. Before I installed the fingerboard, I did some reading here on the Cafe message board and the consensus from builders seemed to be that it was not suitable for musical instrument construction or repair.
Most woodworking glues have a shelf life of one to two years from the date they are made. After that, it may or may not hold. So, how do you.
